On March 27, Rodrigo Castañón, Business Manager of ChileCarne, was part of the first edition of “Latin American Connection: Strengthening Partnerships in the Pig Rearing Value Chain” in São Paulo, Brazil, organized by the Brazilian Pig Breeders Association (ABCS). The event was attended by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) and brought together representatives from more than ten countries to set a common agenda to address shared challenges in health, trade, animal welfare, and sustainability.
The event, supported by the Brazilian Association of Swine Genetics Companies (ABEGS) and the trade media outlet 3tres3, aimed to provide a space for dialogue between Latin American pig farmer associations and promote discussions on common challenges and opportunities for collaboration. During the event, each attending association introduced their own initiatives and challenges, sharing experiences on topics such as animal health and biosecurity, international trade, sustainability, public policy, innovation, and technology.
Representing Chile, Rodrigo Castañón spoke about the national pork industry, its main assets and challenges, and the importance of moving toward a more sustainable, resilient, and competitive industry, taking advantage of health benefits, market diversification, and international partnerships.
“The event was an opportunity to learn about the current situation and challenges facing pork-producing countries in Latin America, in addition to identify the common fronts that currently challenge the region’s pig farming sector. One of the takeaways from the event is the growth potential the region has over other major producing blocs/countries worldwide and the need to protect the sector by addressing the many challenges that arise in food safety, health, animal welfare, and the environment, all while avoiding overregulation,” said ChileCarne’s Business Manager.
